You guys! I think this may be my most favorite episode yet. But of course, I have no real objectivity. I love them all. But this one felt especially sweet as it was a conversation with a friend that I met in an alternate timeline (Middle School) in an alternate place (Papua New Guinea). Isn’t life …at its truest, simply SURREAL? Not sure how else I can describe it, especially as us survivors keep going and bumping into the magical strangeness of our collective reality. I think perhaps the best way is to just TALK ABOUT IT.
Kristen Hayer is a long time friend, someone who shares the 3rd Culture Kid experience with me, even though our experiences with our families and environments were each uniquely our own. Kristen experienced real life sharks, while I simply had nightmares about them. She’s a multiple-dog owner, and I’m obsessed with my cat. My current art project is in ancient alchemical symbols, while hers is focused on the living desert of Mexico.
In this conversation, two reunited adolescent TCK friends discuss our experience of discovering an exotic Animal Kingdom , both physical and symbolic. We remember loving riding horses, being afraid of sharks and snakes, and how our unexpected spirit animals have led us out of confusion and grief.
